English Civil War events in 2021

Talks, walks, re-enactments, exhibitions, 'living history' days: almost every week of the year there's something of interest for English Civil War historians and everyone else who wants to learn more about this pivotal, fascinating period.

Many events are suitable for families/school parties, but it's best to check with the organisers first. This page might not reflect any recent changes in dates or cancellations, so it's also good to check on the organisers' websites to make sure the event is going ahead.

**PANDEMIC UPDATE**

Obviously most live events are sadly cancelled or postponed at present - events will appear here for 2021 when they are finally scheduled to go ahead.

BT = Battlefields Trust event
SK = Sealed Knot event
ECWS = English Civil War Society event

    1. Hi Andrew,

      I've added this above - really interested in this area (hence some of my recent posts). Will check calendar and see if I can make it along.

      I'll be posting soon about the recent witchcraft/Hopkins exhibition in Walthamstow.

  2. Although this is not directly related to the Civil War, you might be interested to know that I will be leading a weekend course, in conjunction with my colleague John Sutton, called 'Royal Newmarket : the story of two royal palaces' at Madingley Hall, Cambridge on the 26th - 28th October 2012.

    The weekend will examine the history and archaeology of the two palaces/hunting lodges built in Newmarket by James I and Charles II and the work of architects such as Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren. The weekend will also include a visit to Newmarket to view the exhibition on the palaces in the National Horseracing Musuem.

    Further details and booking information can be found on my website at:

    Thank you,

  3. Also added above - I try to cover other items of interest from the 17th century and wider Early Modern period.

    I managed to catch the Newmarket Time Team - will add it soon to my full listing of all English Civil War/related episodes: http://www.englishcivilwar.org/2011/11/time-team-english-civil-war-sites.html

    Cheers,

    1. Thank you for adding in the details so quickly, it's much appreciated. I found your site by accident whilst looking for material on the siege of Colchester and think it's fantastic. I will now sing its praises whenever I'm doing a Civil War related event and urge people to log on!
      I haven't seen the Time Team programme on Newmarket yet, but John Sutton was very much involved in the background to that episode and appears briefly on the show.
      I can give you links to the relevant sites for the events I am involved in if you would like them (either to my site or to the sites of the hosting organisation i.e. the Oxford summer school and the Institute of Continuing Education here in Cambridge). It would be good to meet you at Sutton Hoo if you can make it.
      I am currently writing an on-line course on the Civil War for Oxford. I hope it will be available in the autumn and, if I may, I will mention it on your site nearer the time.
      Best wishes,
      Andrew
