Plans for a wind turbine on the edge of the Adwalton Moor battlefield have been deemed 'intrusive' by Kirklees Council.

The application is still open for public comments, though these must be submitted by 9 July 2012 ...

The Battle of Adwalton Moor in June 1643 saw the Earl of Newcastle defeat Fairfax and was significant in consolidating a large part of the north during the 'Royalist summer'.

The application from Hill Top Farm, Birkenshaw (West Yorkshire), is for the 'Erection of 1 no Gaia 11kW wind turbine on an 18m monopole mast' on behalf of agents Universal Green Energy Ltd.

In her report Anne Ross - conservation and design officer at Kirklees council - made the following recommendations:

“The proposed turbine is to be 18m and white in colour. From a visual impact perspective, it is considered that white turbines are more visually intrusive and more noticeable in comparison to the turbines with grey masts and black blades.
“A 15m turbine would also have a reduced impact upon the setting of the registered battlefield. It is therefore advised that a smaller turbine which is darker in colour is considered to reduce the impact upon the setting of the designated heritage asset.”

In response Laura Hirst, writing on behalf of the agents, pointed out that: "In the case of Hill Top Farm all environmental issues have been satisfactorily addressed."

The planning application is open for further public comments until 9 July 2012. It can be found here.
