Battle of the Gunpowder Mills!

Hampden's gunners join the field ...

The English Civil War descended on the Lea Valley last weekend.

Sir Marmaduke Rawdon's Regiment of Foote met Colonel John Hampden's Regiment of Foote in a fierce Saturday afternoon battle at the Royal Gunpowder Mills ... but who would prevail?

Rawdon's the Royalists open with a series of musket volleys.

Far from intimidated, Hampden's troops return fire.

Sneaking round to the flank a Royalist sniper takes aim.

Rawdon's bring forth their pike, and a parley is offered. Unimpressed by the terms on offer, Hampden's own pikemen arrive from the reserve.

The two sides come together in push of pike.

In the thick of it ...

The Roundheads appear to win the battle of strength.

Hampden's advance their artillery. Will it prove decisive?

The gunners give fire.

Casualties start to mount on both sides

Including our brave sniper  ...

All hope seems lost for Rawdon's. The sides trade insults as the two commanding officers come face-to-face once more to discuss terms.

The ... er ...tension rises as the Royalists are forced again to negotiate their position.

Rawdons take the terms of surrender ... Hampden's win the day and take the Gunpowder Mills!

The battlefield falls silent once more ...

  2. Looks like great fun. I've been once to the mills and have been surprised that they don't attracted more visitors than they do as they are a great venue for this kind of thing.
