Stuart art website

The Five Eldest Children of Charles I, Van Dyck, 1637

Laurence Shafe's art history website features a nice set of early Stuart portraits helpfully themed to aid researchers. The two pages on Van Dyck at the royal court are particularly interesting, showing the development of the painter's work during both periods of his life in England ...

Many of the works mentioned were owned by the king as part of his collection, before being sold-off after his death by parliament - a fascinating story told in Jerry Brotton's book The Sale of the Late King's Goods.

The site also features sections showing original plans and drawings for masques, tapestries and other visual art of the period.
